Mahamudra Studies - Schedule Archives

Winter/Spring 2008

Background and Sources

February 4: Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche 2002 Showing the Path of Liberation (The Kagyu Lineage Prayer). Namo Buddha. p. 73 - 91 in Rinpoche's Essentials of Mahamudra - Looking Directly at the Mind, and the Dorje Chang Prayer in English. Reciting the Dorje Chang (Vajradhara) prayer solicits inspiration and support from the Karma Kagyu lineage and provides a short course in mahamudra. It ends with, "Through all my births may I not be separated from the perfect lama and so enjoy the glorious dharma, accomplishing the good qualities of the path and the stages, may I swiftly attain the state of Vajradhara" (the blue Buddha, dharmakaya, and your guru; at the centre of the Kagyu lineage tree). When you have the occasion examine the Kagyu lineage depicted on a lineage tree thangka. It traces the mahamudra teachings. A guide to the lineage tree is in Rinpoche's book.

February 11:
Rinpoche strongly advises his students, especially beginners, to read the spiritual biographies of members of the Kagyu Lineage for inspiration and teachings.

The Moon Beams of Mahamudra Series

THE MOON BEAMS OF MAHAMUDRA SERIES will begin in the Fall with Lobsang P. Lhalungpa (trans.) 2006 2nd ed. Mahamudra – The Moonlight – Quintessence of Mind and Meditation by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal, Wisdom Publ. This is in many ways the Bible of Mahamudra composed by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal (1511 – 1587). H.H. the 16th Karmapa asked Lobsang P. Lhalungpa to translate the book into English so it would be available to western students. The Richard Gere Foundation assisted in funding the 2nd edition. We will cover roughly 20 pages of text each week and continue to practice Mahamudra meditations each week following Peter Barth's A Meditation Guide for Mahamudra. This would be an ideal time for new comers interested in meditation to join the Study Program. We will be working on this text for the next several months but as it is a very comprehensive and detailed examination of Mahamudra I would recommend getting a copy soon and beginning your study over what is left of summer.

We continue this series with another text by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal (1511-1587). His concise treatment of Mahamudra is paired with Crystal Clear, Thrangu Rinpoche's commentary on Tashi Namgya'’s text. The two texts will be covered together and so one should have both texts available for the beginning of the study group. As we are beginning the two texts this is an ideal time for new comers interested in meditation to join the Mahamudra Study Program. You will have to order your own copies from appropriate outlets. Again, at each meeting we will practice a form of Mahamudra meditation following Barth's A Meditation Guide for Mahamudra
